Foodie Pen Pals is a great program started by the lovely Lindsay in September 2011.  ANYONE can join!  You don’t need to be a blogger.. You just need to send a $15 package of goodies to your pen pal you have been matched up with.. Head over to Lindsay’s site for more details.  I promise, you won’t be disappointed and who doesn’t want to get fun stuff in the mail!?

In March I was sent a fun-filled package from Sarah!

Guinness Believer: Private Tasting

I am now a GUINNESS BELIEVER.

IMG_3034

About a month ago, The BF and I attended a private tasting event for Guinness.  I thought it would only be appropriate to let you all know about it on this Irish holiday that is celebrated in America–with lots of BEER!

IMG_3036

The event was held at a small business space in downtown San Diego.  We were asked to be there 30 minutes early.. Of course, we were there with bells on – ready!

IMG_3033

When we entered, there was a welcoming sign and we were immediately given a token.  The token was to exchange for a pint of Guinness (duh) or you were able to take it to the “pour your own pint” station and do it yourself.  We opted out of the “pour your own” because the line was ridiculous.

IMG_3035

Throughout the night, there were old-time Guinness advertisements cycling on the wall.

About 20 minutes in, a gentleman came on the mic and basically talked about how awesome his job is.. Really though–he travels around the US, drinks Guinness, and talks to people about beer.  (Sign me up!!)

DSCN4070

He talked about the history of Guinness–it started back in 1759!!!  Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on an unused brewery at St. James’s Gate, Dublin. It costed him about $147 US dollars.  (Could you imagine?!)

There was a contest to see who could do the PERFECT pour.  I didn’t get chosen to go up, but did you know the PERFECT GUINNESS pour takes exactly 119.5 seconds??

-Tilt it 45 degrees, fill it 2/3.. Wait for it to settle.. Top off the glass!

There was an Instagram contest.  We had to hashtag #guinnessbeliever and the winner would receive a t-shirt. The BF wanted to do a sequenced pic of me drinking..

Then put it together….

IMG_3042

Unfortunately, we didn’t know there was a cut-off time.. and didn’t win.  wa-wa… 😦

After our pint was dry (fairly quickly), we were given a taster of the new Guinness Lager.

Verdict?  I AM A FAN!  I loved it and plan to purchase some for my own.  (excuse the bad lighting in the pic)..

DSCN4075

We learned a couple recipes using Guinness:::

DSCN4080

*Half Guinness, Half Harp

DSCN4079

*Half Guinness, Half Smithwicks

Overall, we had a GREAT night and I am planning to “paint the town black” today!

THANK YOU TO GUINNESS & the GUINNESS BELIEVER clan!

(Healthy) Bites of Joy

Aside

I was waiting, what felt like forever, for my Healthy Bites in the mail! In reality, it was only a couple of days, but I was excited!
When I received them, I put them directly in the freezer to firm up. I then kept them in the fridge to stay in their ball shape 🙂 (The nut butters will become soft, if left out.) The next morning I tried my first bite…
IMG_3173
The Verdict??? YUM!!
When I got home from work that day, I noticed some missing.
The Culprit??? The BF!!
His thoughts??? Delicious! He was in love… & I realized I had to hide them.

What are Healthy Bites you ask??
Healthy Bites is a company built and ran by a lovely lady named Lindsay and her pro-triathlete hubby, James. According to the Healthy Bites site, “Healthy Bites is a company dedicated to providing healthy snack and fuel options for all people.”
The bites are made mostly of gluten-free and organic infredients. When you place an order, the bites come packed, by flavor, with all of the ingredients placed on the outside.
“The mission is to offer the most minimally processed bites proving to people that eating healthy can taste really good while still being really good for you. “
The bites run between 50 and 80 calories a bite and have roughly 3 grams of protein.
I have loved eating a bite every morning before my 6am CrossFit class. It is the perfect amount to get me going and give me the energy I need.

(me, in my car)
I suggest you head over to the site http://www.cottercrunch.com/healthy-bites-2/ to find out more info..
To order, you will email Lindsay (Lindsay@ourhealthybites.com) after clicking here: http://www.cottercrunch.com/order-healthy-bites/ and looking at the flavors.
I suggest the Paleo Muddy Buddy Mocha and Dark Chocolate Cherry Chia—The BF recommends the Muddy Buddy & Mint Chocolate Chip.
~~~~~
My short and sweet thoughts on the bites::
Paleo Mocha Buddy: chocolate forward, fabulous
Key Lime: slightly sour, feeling of coconut
Strawberry Whey: sweet, strawberry goodness, hiddenwhite gems that were possibly white chocolate?
Mint Chocolate: perfectly balanced with chocolate and mint
Dark Chocolate Cherry Chia: chocolatey with a chewy texture from the couple of dried cherries–also added a sour taste
It was a sad day when this happened…. gone 😦
soooo…. head on over to Lindsay’s site and check ’em out! If you don’t want to order a batch, buy the recipe book! I did 😉
Question: What’s your favorite way to fuel before a workout?
New Balance Minimus Zero review
After running half-marathons and a full marathon last year, I was a firm believer that my shoes needed to have support. To me, the cushier the better. Even with cushion, the balls of my feet and heels would be in pain. Why would I want to try the barefoot running shoes?
Until now. New Balance has changed me!
20130301-132400.jpg
I must say that I am not running these days. I do CrossFit. When I started CrossFit in early December 2012, I continued wearing my cushiony running shoes. I thought I needed the support.
I was wrong. When lifting a large amount (to me) of weight, the lower to the ground, the better. If there is too big of a sole, the foot may put pressure on the outer edge and the ankle will buckle.
According to the New Balance website, the “Minimus is a whole new approach to athletic footwear, inspired by Good Form Running and designed to be worn with or without socks. The Minimus Zero running shoe (WR00) is engineered for use on pavement and other varied running surfaces. Supremely comfortable and extremely lightweight, the Minimus Zero is taking the running world by storm.”
20130301-131754.jpg
The shoes have been great during all WODS (lifting, running, jumping) because of how light and flexible they are. I have yet to run a long distance in the shoes. I know most people do, but for me, I would want a cushion due to the pain that comes in my footsies.
20130301-131805.jpg
Since being made of mesh, the shoes are able to “breathe” and dry off quickly. I have yet to wear them without socks (not really my thing), but as mentioned on the site, this is acceptable. The shoe has a “0mm heel-to-toe drop and is designed to mimic the natural shape of the foot, providing a more fitted feel that is similar to a comfortable sock.” Source
20130301-131800.jpg
One of the things I love most about these shoes are the little circles on the bottom.  The concentric circles act like suction cups to add traction.  I have found this to be especially helpful during box jumps and lifting heavy.  My feet stay put!
All-in-all, I highly recommend these shoes if you are in the market for a minimus shoes. Who knows? You may turn out to be convert, like me!
xoxo, Haley
Question: Have you ever tried a minimus shoe? Like it??
